Big Changes Coming to Fort Worth Roads

by Amanda Ryan

A major highway project is on the way, and it could impact your daily drive more than you think.

If you drive near downtown Fort Worth, this is something you’ll want to keep on your radar. A
major $142 million highway improvement project is set to begin later this year, and while it
promises long-term benefits, it may bring some short-term headaches for commuters. The
project is part of the ongoing North Tarrant Express expansion and will focus on improving a
busy stretch of Interstate 35W near downtown.

At the center of this project is the replacement of the Sylvania Avenue bridge, a structure that
has been around since 1963. Over the years, it has been hit multiple times due to its low
clearance, causing safety concerns and traffic delays. The new bridge will be rebuilt with higher
clearance to help prevent accidents and keep traffic moving more smoothly.

But that is not all. The project will also include:
• Reconstruction of nearby frontage roads
• Updates to entrance and exit ramps along Airport Freeway
• A new continuous eastbound frontage road
• Construction of a new bridge over the Trinity River

With over 165,000 vehicles traveling this stretch of I-35W reconstruction, these improvements
are expected to make a big difference once completed. Construction is expected to last about
three years, with the bridge replacement alone taking around 18 months. The good news is that
work will pause during the 2026 FIFA World Cup activities happening in North Texas next
summer, helping reduce disruptions during a major global event. In the meantime, drivers
should plan ahead and expect changes in traffic patterns once construction begins.

What this means for you?
If you live, work, or frequently travel through Fort Worth, staying informed and planning alternate
routes could save you time and stress in the months ahead.

Tips for Navigating the Construction

With a project this size, a little planning can go a long way. Here are a few simple ways to stay
ahead of the traffic:

Plan your route ahead of time
Before heading out, check traffic updates and look for alternate routes around Interstate
35W to avoid unexpected delays.

Give yourself extra travel time
Even a small buffer can make your commute less stressful, especially during peak hours
near Fort Worth.

Use navigation apps for real-time updates
Apps like Google Maps or Waze can help reroute you quickly if traffic builds up.

Avoid peak hours when possible
If your schedule allows, try traveling earlier or later than usual to skip the heaviest
congestion.

Stay updated on project progress
Keeping an eye on local updates can help you anticipate major changes, road closures,
or new traffic patterns.

Big improvements are on the way, and while the road there may be a bit bumpy, the end result
is designed to make your daily drive safer and smoother.
