The Road Ahead: What to Expect from the East Broad Street Expansion

by Amanda Ryan

Let’s be honest for a second: nobody looks forward to road construction. Seeing orange barrels pop up on your daily commute usually means it's time to brace for delays.

But if you are one of the 27,700 drivers who crawl through the bumper-to-bumper traffic near Mansfield High School every day, you also know that doing nothing isn’t an option. The traffic volume is real, the bottleneck is frustrating, and the area is growing fast.

Change is officially on the way. A massive $17,109,019 infrastructure development is kicking off along East Broad Street to permanently fix the gridlock. Here is a complete guide to what is happening, when it starts, and how it will actually impact your daily drive.

The Big Picture: What’s Changing?
This isn’t a quick patch-and-paint job. The city is completely reconstructing East Broad Street from Mansfield High School all the way east to North Holland Road (minus the 360 crossing).

The headline news? The entire stretch is being widened from four lanes to a permanent six-lane configuration using heavy-duty asphalt standards.

Beyond just adding asphalt, the project is bringing a total infrastructure overhaul to the corridor:

  • Smart Traffic Signals & Lighting: Brand-new signals and upgraded street lighting to keep traffic moving safely, even after dark.
  • Modernized Storm Drainage: A complete tear-out and replacement of the drainage system to prevent localized flooding during heavy Texas downpours.
  • Water Line Alterations: Under-the-hood upgrades to local water infrastructure.
  • Corridor Aesthetics: High-end landscaping and visual upgrades that match Mansfield’s new premium design standards.
The city also built a strict 10% contingency reserve directly into the budget. This is specifically earmarked to handle any unexpected underground utility surprises without causing funding delays later.

The Survival Plan: How Construction Will Affect Your Commute
A 16-month timeline sounds daunting, but project planners designed this development with local commuters and businesses in mind. Crews are scheduled to break ground this August, with completion targeted for Spring 2028.

The most critical detail for your morning commute? Two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction for the entire duration of the project. You will still be able to get where you need to go, and every single business along the corridor will remain fully accessible.

Furthermore, the project management team is actively coordinating with Mansfield ISD right now. The goal is to carefully manage the initial construction footprint so that the thousands of students heading back to Mansfield High School don't face chaos during the first few weeks of school.

Behind the Scenes: Why This Team Was Chosen
Infrastructure projects of this scale require serious vetting. To get the best team for the job, the city used a competitive selection process that weighed cost, timeline, contractor experience, and key personnel.

Ultimately, three specialized teams were brought on board:

  1. The Fane Group, LLC (General Construction)
  2. Britton and Crawford, LLC (Surveying)
  3. Robert Kistner, Inc. (Materials Testing)
Interestingly, The Fane Group was not the lowest bidder on the table. However, they earned the highest overall score because their proposal fast-tracks the timeline. They committed to finishing the job 100 working days sooner than the lowest bidder. In calendar terms, that saves the community about five full months of construction delays. The city decided that saving nearly half a year of orange barrels was well worth the investment to protect local business revenues and get drivers moving sooner.

Looking Forward

While the next several months will require a little extra patience, the light at the end of the tunnel is a six-lane, smoothly flowing East Broad Street.
