Gate Access Returns to DFW

If you've flown out of DFW for years, this might sound a little strange at first: you can now get to the gates without actually flying.

DFW is one of 13 airports taking part in a new TSA program called Gateside by TSA PreCheck. It lets certain people who aren't traveling that day get through security and into the gate area.

So if you're dropping off a family member and want to walk a little farther with them, you may be able to do that. You could also meet someone during a layover or spend some time together at one of the restaurants and shops past security.

There is a catch, though. You can't decide to do this when you pull up to the terminal. Eligible TSA PreCheck members must apply online 1 to 3 days before their visit and be approved first. Some members of other trusted-traveler programs can also apply if they have a Known Traveler Number.

Once approved, the visitor can use a TSA PreCheck lane with an acceptable ID. The pass is good for that calendar day, and re-entry is allowed that same day.

The idea may feel familiar to longtime travelers. Before 9/11, friends and family members could generally go through security with passengers and see them off at the gate. That changed after the attacks as airports tightened security and limited access to secure areas.

Now, almost 25 years later, DFW is bringing a small piece of that experience back for eligible visitors.

DFW is also the only airport in Texas included in the program's initial rollout. TSA says it plans to add more airports in the coming months.

If you're eligible and have someone flying out of DFW, remember to apply ahead of time. That extra bit of planning could mean you get to walk with them all the way to the gate.
